One of the most difficult task a newbie faces when he starts a website/blog is getting web traffic. This adversely affects your Google Adsense earnings (if you're using on your site) as it primarily depends upon the number of page views. Also, if you're interested in getting advertisers, that also is influenced on amount of web traffic you're getting.

Finally, if you want to sell your website (for eg. on Flippa.com) the buyers look at the number of unique visitors you've on your site. So concluding from all the above reasons, it's imperative that you get web traffic very early and keep on gradually increasing. Using a perfect seo wordpress theme like Thesis or Arthemia, is one way of automatically getting web traffic.

Below are some of the ways for newbies, on getting early web traffic with relative ease.

SITEMAP - SUBMIT TO SEARCH ENGINES like GOOGLE, YAHOO, BING

This is the first step in getting your web traffic. Write a few quality and original Âarticles/posts and create a sitemap with it's links. If you're on WordPress, there are plethora of WordPress plugins which automatically submit your sitemap to Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask etc. My favourite sitemap plugin is Google XML Sitemaps.

Download Google XML Sitemap Generator

This plugin will better help your blog or website to index all your pages. Additional advantage is that it notifies all major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask etc whenever there is an update or fresh content.

So, you've generated a sitemapÂfor your blog or website. Now you can check this sitemap as follow.

Take care to include www. in the website address.

Now you need to submit your sitemap to Google and Bing. When you submit to Bing, your sitemap is automatically submitted to Yahoo also.

ÂSubmitting site content or sitemap in Google

You can specifically submit your sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools.

  • First you need to add your site to Google Webmaster Tools.
  • After adding your site, click on your site link.
  • Then on the left hand side, click on ÂSiteConfiguration > Sitemaps.
  • Now you see a Add/Test SitemapÂon the far right hand side. Click on it and add your sitemap to Google to index your pages.

You can login into Bing Webmaster Tools using Windows Live id. After entering with your Windows Live id you can add a site. There are several options to verify your sitemap.

In conclusion, submitting sitemap to Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask will make search engines indexing your website and this is the first step in getting web traffic for starter blogs.

COMMENT ON BLOGS/WEBSITES

Although, this is an old method of getting web traffic, this has not much relevance from SEO point of view. Earlier many blogs were "do-follow", and your links would count as backlinks. But now all the comment systems are "no-follow" and you don't receive any SEO juice. But commenting on top blogs and websites still works with regard to increasing traffic on your site. The list of some of the top tech blogs where you can comment are as follows:

Leave a valuable comment and relevant link on relevant websites with regard to your URL or article.

SUBMIT TO SOCIAL NEWS WEBSITES

There are many social news websites like digg, reddit, delicious, stumbleupon, facebook, google plus, twitter etc to which you can submit your articles or URLs. If the article is really worthful and good, there is no bar on receiving traffic from these social news websites.

From the above 3 points, getting web traffic (though in little volume) is relatively easy if you write original and quality content. Tell me your experience in the comment section if you got any tips to improve web traffic in the early days.
